Fitness is my passion, and it has been for thirty years. At the age of fourteen, exercise intrigued me beyond mastering a basic level of competency. Even at that early age it struck me that if I could become stronger and faster and develop more endurance, then I would be able to play harder. Play being the operative word in the latter sentence. I do find exercise synonymous with fun. Of course, my definition of play may not be the same as others’, and even my own definition of it has changed over the years. I’ve moved from the kid on the playground scaling jungle gyms to a competitive athlete and a United States Marine, to my current roles as a coach, CrossFit competitor, husband, and the father of two amazing girls. As I passed through each stage, fitness has always enhanced my life, and it has been the key to my continued desire to push my potential for peak performance. Having met with great success in my fitness pursuits, I found myself asking, “How can I teach others to know gratification from their fitness, and what is it about my approach to exercise that makes it so inherent to me, so centering in my daily life?” In answer to this question, I founded CrossFit Oldtown. With my passion now my vocation, I’m able to share the knowledge I’ve gained though my pursuits and provide others with the tools necessary to achieve results from their workouts. CrossFit is also a great way to play hard!
Melissa started CrossFit in May of 2008 in order to supplement her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training. Melissa has always had a passion for movement. As a child she was involved in dance, soccer, and various outdoor activities. Her career as an executive protection agent led her to study BJJ, which she began competing in not long after she started her training. She attributes her three International BJJ medals to CrossFit and Jerry Hill’s programming. It wasn’t long after she discovered CrossFit that she developed a desire to coach and help others to attain their goals. In August of 2008 she attended the Level I Instructors course, left her career of 9 years and jumped headlong into coaching CrossFit and BJJ. Since then she has received her Olympic Weightlifting, CrossFit Endurance and Basic Barbell Certifications, and is currently pursuing a degree in exercise science. Melissa finds few things that are as rewarding as coaching people to their personal goals, whether it be an athlete losing 75lbs, getting their first pull up, or completing their first IronMan. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.”- Aristotle

Throughout High School I played football, wrestled, and ran track in Atlanta, GA. My senior year I placed 3rd in the state at the pole vault and continued in college capturing eight conference championships and runner-up titles between the indoor and outdoor season. After trying the traditional gym approach post-grad, I found CrossFit in 2008 and fell in love with it immediately. I received my Level 1 Certification in 2009 and started training when we started the non-profit affiliate CrossFit Gonzaga in August 2009. To pay the bills I teach Computer Science at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. I love coaching new members on the Olympic lifts, deadlifts, and anything on rings. Seeing improvements in members on the small scale and the large scale makes coaching at CrossFit OldTown a great experience.
Jeremy began training at CrossFit Oldtown to get in shape for his wedding and honeymoon in April 2009. Now, more than three years later, Jeremy continues to pursue new health, fitness and wellness goals as a Crossfit athlete and Assistant Coach. As a former high school, college athlete and recreational runner (completing several half-marathons and a Marine Corps Marathon), Jeremy has a tremendous base of knowledge from which to draw from to help others achieve their goals. Jeremy is certified by U.S.A. Weightlifting as a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach and is dedicated to helping people move better, get stronger, understand their bodies, lose weight and achieve whatever other goals they set. “The ability to move your body efficiently through space is critical in everyday life,” Jeremy says, “CrossFit is unique because the movements we perform have real-world application – whether you’re carrying groceries, playing with your children, or working in the yard, CrossFit makes life easier.”
Born and raised in northern Ohio, Brandon Gardner ventured to the Washington DC metropolitan area in the spring of 2009. Living and currently working in the Alexandria Old Town area, Brandon has had a passion for sports since his youth. Being a three sport athlete for most of high school in football, basketball and track; his truest love was in the game of football and he continued to chase that passion into college. Brandon played football for Mount Union University as an offensive lineman for 4 seasons. He and his team captured 3 NCAA Division III National Championships as well as 4 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) titles. Though Brandon will tell you his collegiate football road had its bumps, suffering two season ending injuries, to him it was one of the most rewarding experiences of his life and he would not trade it for anything. Since then Brandon has found a passion, love and drive for fitness; specifically Crossfit. Since joining Crossfit Oldtown in September of 2011, Brandon has successfully lost close to 40lbs and competes’ in an array of Crossfit competitions across the region. Brandon’s educational background begins with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and he is currently working on a Masters degree in Criminal Justice with a focus in Criminal Behavior, in which he hopes to finish up next spring. Brandon is a certified CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1) Trainer and a proud member of the CFOT Team. As a competitor himself Brandon strives for a fun and rewarding class environment and is willing to assist anyone with any level of fitness to help them reach their full potential and goals.
Growing up there was no off-season in my family; all of us played hockey year-round and soccer in the summer. In 2003 I attended SUNY Brockport and played hockey for the Jr. Americans. In the end of 2003 I joined the Marine Corps infantry and spent 9 years in the reserves, deploying to Iraq, Australia, and Morocco. During my years with the Marine Corps I continued to play hockey as well dabbling in amateur body-building. I spent a few years from 2006-2008 working as a personal trainer after receiving my ACE training certification but was increasingly frustrated with the people’s willingness to try and stick with the functional movements that are so important to everyone’s health. I first discovered CrossFit in early 2009 and was instantly drawn to the functionality of the movements. I quickly adopted the CrossFit methodologies into my lifestyle, including everything from programing to nutrition. In late 2009, I found CrossFit Oldtown (CFOT) and was hooked, soaking up everything I could from Jerry and Melissa. Joining CFOT ignited a passion within me for helping others to experience the amazing benefits of CrossFit in the same way that I did. In July of 2012 I received my Level 1 Certification and have been assisting at CFOT ever since!
Born, raised, work and live in my hometown of Alexandria, VA. I grew up playing soccer, lacrosse, wrestling and rugby on through college and men’s clubs. I did some triathlons, a marathon and shorter distance races in search of fitness. While proud of my accomplishments, I felt hollow in my overall fitness. In March of 2008, I stumbled onto Crossfit Oldtown and Jerry Hill. I fell in love with the variety, intensity, “funishment” and camaraderie of my new Crossfit family. Jerry has created an environment where we encourage and help each other to reach goals shared with friends. Crossfit filled in the gaps of my fitness. In January of 2010, I received my Crossfit Level 1 Certification. I use that knowledge working with new members in our Foundations program. In addition to my work as a financial advisor at the Speck-Caudron Investment Group, I am passionate about seeing new friends accomplish the goals they dared to dream. At Crossfit Oldtown, we are all about making you better. Inside and outside the gym. I am proud to be a part if it. Crossfit Oldtown. Simply. Better
